Application process
-
Success Profiles
The Civil Service recruits using Success Profiles.
When you apply for a role, the job advert will outline the elements of the Success profiles which you will be assessed against. This will allow you to demonstrate the necessary skills and experience for the role.

Disability Confident scheme
The HMCTS aspires to be a disability inclusive organisation, where we support colleagues with disabilities or long term health conditions to have fulfilling careers. We recognise that different people may have different needs in terms of the support they need to work with us, and we strive to adapt to all of them.
Disability Confident Scheme under the Civil Service offers an interview to a fair and proportionate number of disabled applicants, on the condition that they that meet the minimum criteria for the role. The aim is to encourage positive action, encouraging disabled people to apply for jobs and have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and talents at the interview.
-
Reasonable Adjustments
We understand that candidates may require reasonable adjustments during the assessment process to help them succeed. These may include, but are not limited to:
-
changing the time, location, or format of interviews
-
providing interview questions in written format
-
providing interview questions in advance of the interview
-
a sign language interpreter
-
a supported test session, where a trained support worker can aid understanding or read the questions out loud
You can make us aware of these adjustments when applying for the role. Our recruitment team will then liaise with you further to understand your needs better or put the adjustments in place. If you don’t want to disclose your request when applying, it can still be considered at the interview stage, as long as you let the recruitment team know ahead of your interview.

Going Forward into Employment (GFiE) Scheme
Going Forward into Employment (GFiE) life chance recruitment schemes use innovative approaches to recruit people from a wide range of backgrounds into the Civil Service.
-
Great Place to Work for Veterans Scheme
The Great Place to Work for Veterans scheme is an opt-in recruitment scheme which allows veterans who meet the minimum criteria to progress to the next stage – whether that’s an interview or an online test. All appointments will continue to be made on merit.
-
Pre-Employment Checks
Any offer of employment will be subject to you clearing the pre-employment checks.
HMCTS complies with the Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), which ensures organisations are employing individuals based on four main checks:
- Identity
- Right to work in the UK
- Employment history
- Criminal record check
In addition, you may also be subject to additional checks such as security, previous civil service and fraud. Further details on these additional checks are provided at the pre-employment checking stage. Remember, you should never resign from your current post until you receive an official email informing you that your checks are complete.
